Youth Animal Welfare Symposium
Towards a kinder world for animals.SPCA Singapore

Youths will always be the next generation that can create a better world for the animals—we just have to provide them with the opportunity to do so.
For years without change, the SPCA has been running educational talks for youths during their ‘Youth Animal Welfare’ symposium, and it was not something we could do away with. On top of that, being in the middle of a pandemic, there was the additional hurdle of webinars-fatigue.
So how did we combat all that without completely overthrowing tradition? Here’s how we did it.

We dangled carrots and attracted youths - not rabbits!
Instead of playing the numbers game, we chose to focus on youths who were already interested in the animal welfare scene.
Animal Action Grant became our USP for the symposium. With up to $1,000 per project, it was an opportunity for students to kick-start their journey into the animal welfare scene. By choosing to make grant applications open only to participants who attended the talk, it acted as an incentive for audiences to attend. Connecting with 209 schools in Singapore, we encouraged students to sit in the talks for inspiration on their project.
The grant worked as a great incentive and call-to-action for our participants, with each selected team individually attached to a mentor from the SPCA. 7 youth projects were chosen in the end, with topics revolving around raising awareness on animal welfare issues: Companion Animals, Cruelty-free Lifestyle, Wildlife, and more. The projects are still ongoing.
We had everyone talking about local and non-local animals.
To make things more compelling for our listeners, we reached out to a range of international organisations to cover a broad range of topics, including subjects that are not commonly discussed locally.
Organisations included
Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES), Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS), Cat Welfare Society (CWS), Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI), House Rabbit Society Singapore (HRSS), Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS), World Animal Protection (WAP), and of course SPCA Singapore themselves.
The webinars garnered over 344 live viewers.

Designing a campaign for animals.
For the first time, the symposium was given proper branding. I spearheaded the entire design to create materials for the event, including logo, brand graphics, content and outreach materials, website, prints, and merchandise.
The campaign was designed to last, with intentions for it to be reused for future events. A wide range of animals was illustrated to ensure inclusivity of all types of creatures - domestic, farm, wildlife.
I was also the lead brands, comms, marketing person for other campaigns and events!
